Sir Elton Johns photograph (not indecent)

Northumbria Police removed Klara and Edda Belly-Dancing 1998 from the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, last month after a complaint by a gallery employee. The image of two young girls, one skimpily dressed and the other naked, was part of the installation Thanksgiving by the American photographer, Nan Goldin. The collection of 149 photographs was purchased by Sir Elton in 1999 after it went on show at the White Cube gallery in London in 1999. The CPS decided in 2001 that the image was not indecent. Kerrie Bell, head of the CPS Northumbria South Unit, said: ?To prove that the photograph is indecent we must be satisfied that contemporary standards of propriety are so different now to what they were in 2001, that it is more likely than not that a court will conclude that the photograph is indecent. I am not satisfied that is the case.?
