A sculpture by Alberto Giacometti last night became the most expensive piece of art sold at auction.

The life-sized bronze work Lhomme qui marche I (Walking Man I), sold for ?65,001,250 after just eight minutes of bidding at Sothebys. It had been estimated to fetch between ?12m and ?18m but finally went to an anonymous buyer, bidding by telephone, for a hammer price of ?58m plus commission. The sculpture is considered one of the most important by the 20th-century Swiss artist.

Other lots in the sale of Impressionist and Modern Art also exceeded expectations. Gustav Klimts Kirche In Cassone, went for ?26,921,250 ? far above the ?12m to ?18m estimate. The previous auction record was Picassos Boy With A Pipe, sold for ?58.5m in 2004.
