thunderbirds are go
I type this from a VM of Statler. Statlers based on Debian.
Debian does not use Thunderbird as a mail client it uses a rebranded thunderbird called Icebird?
I spent years setting up my email. It does everything I want it to do.
But Debian makes it quite difficult to install thunderbird.
I finaly got round the annoying problem by downloading an old version of thunderbird.
Thunderbird version 2
then start thunderbird from where ever you put it ./thunderbird
Debian stores user settings in a folder called .thunderbird inside /home/myname/.thunderbird
On my other system it is in a folder called .mozilla-thunderbird
I copied my user settings verbatim into my new home directory /home/myname/.mozilla-thunderbird
then in the defalt Debian folder /home/myname/.thunderbird
I edited a file called profiles.ini it looks like this
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/z800uwwy.default
I changed this to look like this. (changed parts are in bold)
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=2
Path=/home/myname/.mozilla-thunderbird/Profiles/some-profile-name
Basicly I changed a 1 to a 2 and pointed the .ini file to look in my .mozilla-thunderbird folder
as soon as I did this and fired up thunderbird everything was back to what I consider normal.
Im not sure this will work for everyone but it worked for me.

who shot first Han or Greedo?
Thank you to everybody who has participated in this discussion.
The final decision on window controls for 10.04 LTS is as follows:
- the window controls will remain on the left, however - the order will change to be (from left) close, minimize, maximise
The decision is based on the view that putting the close button in the corner will be most familiar to many users, even if the particular choice of corner is not.
For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a comment dependent on the date :-)
Our intent is to encourage innovation, discussion, and design with the right of the window title bar. We have some ideas, and others are already springing up in the community. We welcome participation on the Ayatana list, where those can play out. This will be a fruitful topic for the design track at UDS in Brussels in May.
This bug is now marked wontfix. Please focus ongoing participation on the opportunities for innovation that this opens up. The decision as to the window controls location and order itself is now final, and as they say in the old newspapers, no further correspondence will be entered into.

Implications of rejecting "intellectual property"
on 13 Nov 2009
Ive laid down the reasoning behind my rejection of the intellectual property idea, primarily in recognizing that it cannot exist without the medium and that in fact it is the medium itself - a specific property of the medium such are the dents arranged on the surface of a compact disc or energy patterns within the brain, and so on.

why I can't use the Gimp
Probably the worst thing about Gimp is..
Gimp isnt Photoshop. It can do all the things Photoshop can do, but it takes three times as long to do them.
this is because it isnt Photoshop and never will be
why is Gimp not like Photoshop?
Adobe like most corporate bastards have probably got patents on things like FF
pressing the F key twice in photoshop gives you wonderful full screen.
Pressing F in Gimp brings up a select tool?
cleverly in an attempt to be as different from Photoshop as possible they opted to use seemingly arbitrary letters and key strokes as short cut keys in an attempt not to get sued by the monolithic Adobe.
the biggest pain in the ass ever
By far the biggest annoyance for me anyway are the windows.
I like the windows in the same window not floating about all over the place.
The Gimp is a classic example of what happens when big business wields supreme power over freedom
If Adobe didnt exist Im sure The Gimp would be exactly the same as Photoshop. (becouse Photoshop makes sense)
Its layers panel would make sense everything would be in one window, when you pressed FF the whole thing would go full screen and everything, It would be great. It would be Photoshop only called the Gimp.
most importantly it would all just make sense.
has Adobe patented everything to do with image editing that makes sense?
Is The Gimp all the bits Adobe couldnt be arsed to patent?
It sure feels like it.
